Why Do Dogs Lick People?

Many people have wondered why dogs like people. Due to the arrangement of genes in a dogs’ body, licking is a very common behavior of dogs. A dog generally doing this either does it for attention, they want something, or they are expressing submissiveness and others do this as a sort of “Welcome Home.” The licking behavior of dog has two main causes:
- Licking is a way of communication or a way expression: Many scientists stated that a dog licking someone is a way of expressing their love to their master. Dogs use this as an alternative to speaking because as we all know, they can’t speak. Sometimes dogs may lick their masters in front of the strangers to express the bonding with the master. The licking behavior is normal for a dog as a way of communication with humans. This is similar to how we as humans use various emotions to express how we fill.
- There are also biological reasons behind this. Sometimes the licking behavior of dogs is considered biological behavior. Not only dogs, but other animals lick their masters mainly for the purpose of getting something they want. Puppies are often licked by their mothers in an attempt to groom them and also to establish a mother-baby bonding. In the early life period, puppies also lick the dog’s mouth for food. This is generally considered as the stimulus for the mothers to vomit the food from their stomach.
Another topic of interest when it comes to dogs licking is when they lick their feet. A dog will spend lots of time cleaning its feet with its tongue, especially if it is active outside. Dirt, stones, pieces of wood and other materials can become lodged under a dog’s nail and between the pads of its feet. As a result of this, dogs often lick their paws in order to alleviate the pain associated with the material lodged under their nails or in their paws. This is generally done to indicate there is a lesion such as small cut or cyst on their paw.
Every species of animal has a habit that humans see as not normal. This is because as humans, we are not used to such habits and behavior because we have evolved from it. As a result, we don’t understand the meaning behind this behavior and have an inability to relate to this behavior. Animals like dogs are used to being outside and living life without the things that we have as humans. For example, dogs can’t put a bandage on a bruise if because they are incapable of this, whereas a human can. A dog can’t get a towel and wash its face the way a human can. That said, the licking nature of dogs is normal activity just like what we do as humans on a day to day basis is seen as normal activity. Yes, what they do may be disgusting to us as humans, but they have no other options like we do as humans.
