Bone Meal For Dogs

A dog’s diet is important to ensure its health and long life. A dog’s nutritional needs are vastly different from that of humans and therefore it highly illogical to feed healthy human food to dogs. Nutritional balance is important in a dog’s diet; the ratio of calcium and phosphorus is especially crucial and it should be maintained for the dog to remain healthy.

If you want to provide homemade meals for your dog then by all means do so but make sure that you follow recipes that have been tried and tested and please do not try to replace ingredients in these recipes as you see fit. These recipes have gone through a lot of testing and are based on sound nutritional principle. And as a responsible pet owner it would be wise to follow these methods rather than to wing it.

Bone meal is a mixture made of ground and crushed bones, which is a rich source of calcium and phosphorus. What is important to know is that bone meal is not just a supplement to your dog’s diet it is in fact a part of your pet’s meal, necessary for his well being. There are many brands of bone meal in the market today which are highly rated. I always feel safe to go with big pet food manufacturers which might seem shallow but my reasoning is that these manufacturers usually have done more research and have a more stringent quality control. Plus they have a name to maintain which would definitely ensure good quality food.

Although there are many veterinarians out there who would recommend commercial pet food to homemade ones, most agree that giving bones that are suitable for dogs and puppies is a good idea. This is more for the dog to gnaw on than to eat. Therefore it is best not to cook the bone as it will splinter and might injure your dog. Marrow bone is recommended especially for puppies to loosen baby teeth. But they recommend that the marrow in the bone be removed as it is filled with fat. Once the bone is polished, you can throw away the bone and provide your dog with another.

If you are unable to provide your dog a balanced diet or are unsure of the diet you have him on now, I would recommend that you give your dog the commercial meals available. It would be much better to provide your dog meals that have been tested and approved of than to experiment on his diets which might in the long run affect even his life. It is very important to understand that you as a pet owner are the one responsible for making decisions for your dog’s well being. And your dog depends on you to take good care of him so always make informed decisions. And always make decisions that are best for your dog.
